List of Chronological Historic Events in Lycoming County

Here's a short list of significant events by year. Handy reference tool for the student, as well as the armchair historian.

Historic Markers in Lycoming County

The historical marker program, established in 1946, is one of the Commission's oldest and most popular programs. The blue and gold markers located throughout the state highlight people, places, and events significant in state and national history. Presently, nearly 1,800 markers recognize Pennsylvania's history--from William Penn's country home, to the bloody Homestead Strike of 1892 to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, the nation's first long-distance superhighway. Take a day trip and visit all of the historic markers in Lycoming County. Here is a short list of the markers, description and location.

The Pennsylvania Digital Grassroots Grant

This project by Williamsport Area High School students involves the study of the historical and cultural aspects of the Williamsport community during the mid-1800s when Williamsport was known as the "lumber capitol of the world" and boasted more millionaires per capita than anyplace else in the country. The project focuses primarily on the background and history of Williamsport's Historic District, West Fourth Street, now known as "Millionaires Row."

The Pennsylvania Digital Grass Roots Initiative offers teachers and students the opportunity to digitize "Pennsylvania-specific" content and place it on the web in the context of a lesson plan or web project. These lessons and projects will contribute to the Link-to Learn collection of Internet activities on the Professional Development web site and will provide a resource for Pennsylvania educators seeking to implement the academic standards. Selected proposals will be displayed on the Pennsylvania Department of Education's web site and the internet for us by educators across the state, country and world. Funds for the Pennsylvania Digital Grass Roots Initiative is provided under the Technology Literacy Challenge Fund Program.
